TheVerb Studio is a startup founded by Ilangovan K S and Bharath Kumar J – two NIT Trichy tech grads with a passion for dance. They are revolutionizing the way dance is taught, by introducing technology into traditional dance classes.
Founders Bharath Kumar J and Ilangovan K S
TheVerb Studio was started when the two founders realized that it was very hard for people to get access to quality dance lessons in India. Being “70% dancers and 30% engineers”, as co-founder Ilangovan says, and knowing that the world was shifting to digital platforms, the founders used their engineering background to start providing dance lessons over the internet.
TheVerb Studio uses a subscription model, through their website, to provide dance lessons. The lessons are taught by well-known dancers in their genre and are customizable to each learner. Technology can make the time slots for learning flexible for any learner and they needn’t attend a physical class in order to learn. TheVerb Studio is beneficial for both instructors and learners since it allows the instructors to widen their reach. The instructors are capable of teaching people far away with no added difficulty and learners gain by being able to get access to high quality dance teaching without stepping out of the house.
They are currently targeting 18-25 year olds with a passion for dance. In the next five years, they plan to expand their reach across Asia, include more dance forms and have a few offline centers in addition to their online platform.
Tapping into NSRCEL
Ilangovan and Bharath credit IIMB’s innovation and incubation hub, the N.S. Raghavan Center for Entrepreneurial Learning (NSRCEL) with helping them grow their idea. Although they had already created their product before joining NSRCEL, they are grateful for the freedom and help that NSRCEL has given them in helping grow the idea. They do feel that having special classes for companies that are in different stages of growth would help.
Ilangovan has some advice for budding entrepreneurs. “When you have an idea that you are passionate about, just start. Don’t listen to the naysayers, instead, follow your instincts.” He believes that you should always be willing to learn and thanks to the digital age that we live in, the sky’s the limit for the amount of knowledge you can gain.
