08 August, 2018, Bengaluru: Professor P D Jose, IIM Bangalore faculty from the Strategy area and Chair, Digital Learning at IIMB, conducted a faculty development workshop on ‘Role of MOOCs and Digital Platforms in MBA Programs’, in association with mbauniverse.com, on August 02, 2018 at the IIMB campus.The workshop was a precursor to the 9th Indian Management Conclave, co-hosted by IIM Bangalore and mbauniverse.com, on August 03-04.
Amit Agnihotri, Founder, mbauniverse.com, set off the discussion by pointing out that creativity is going to be at a great premium. He also discussed the future of jobs and skills and the teaching methodologies, as well as how the digital platform plays a big role in our daily lives.
Prof. P.D. Jose explained what MOOCS (Massive Open Online Courses) are and how they work, in detail and said that MOOCS can be a new way of looking at education. With the help of data, he listed the reasons why India is second only to China, in terms of the number of students studying abroad. “Education is becoming global, it is now without boundaries”, he added.
He further explained what the 21st century learning model should be, various myths about MOOCs, and the advantages of MOOCs over the traditional mode of classroom education.
He spoke at length about IIMBx, which is the institute’s home portal for easy access to all its courses, and played a video on Strategy Management offered by IIMBx. “IIMBx is a MOOC platform where free online courses are offered by IIM Bangalore. Operating on the edX platform, it offers free MOOCs and MicroMasters programs in a wide range of disciplines to a worldwide student body. IIMBx is also the national coordinator for SWAYAM (Study Webs of Active–Learning for Young Aspiring Minds), a MOOC-based initiative by the Government of India.
Natasha Mujgule, Instructional Designer at IIMBx, emphasized the importance of instructional designing in today’s digital world. She listed various methods like engagement strategies, active forums, webinars, etc. to assess the MOOCs. Usha Ganeshan, Program Manager at IIMBx, shared details like the number of participants, certificate courses offered by IIMBx, etc.Girish Gurjar, Assistant Manager at IIMBx spoke how the Government’s MOOC initiatives and that of IIM Bangalore’s will help quality education reach the masses.
Prof. Jose rounded off the discussion by quoting the vision of setting up IIMBx. He said, “The vision of the IIMBx programme is to use digital learning to enable widespread access to management education.”
The workshop was well attended by faculty from management colleges in India.
