Of the five countries that celebrate their Independence Day on August 15, that of two countries — India and South Korea — holds more significance to us, the EPGP batch of 2019 at IIM Bangalore, as we got to witness the hoisting of the Indian national flag on foreign soil. We are in South Korea as part of our international immersion module.
The Indian embassy in South Korea was kind enough to invite our batch to join the Independence Day celebration with them. Feelings of patriotism, pride and nostalgia engulfed us when the national anthem was played. After this, we proceeded to our war room — classrooms at KAIST College of Business.
Jae Choi, Executive Vice-President, Doosan Corporation, explained to us the nitty-gritties of problem-solving in the business world. He encouraged the batch to follow a structured approach in tackling any problem and enlightened us with ‘seven steps to McKinsey problem solving’ as he has worked with McKinsey previously. He shared many insights with the batch, from his rich work experience at McKinsey and Doosan.
Jae Choi helped us understand the application of different frameworks in real-world business problems. He communicated to us the importance of looking at any problem with multiple lenses and performing several iterations. He said: “Fail fast and fail cheap.”
We hope to carry the learnings from the wonderful session with us and apply them in the future.
