Post Graduate Programme in Enterprise Management
The Post Graduate Programme in Enterprise Management (PGPEM) is a 22-month weekend residential management programme. It is a masters level diploma granting programme offered by the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB). It is equivalent to Executive Post Graduate Programme (EPGP) offered by IIMB in terms of credits and rigour, but is scheduled on Friday afternoons and Saturdays over about 22 months to make it accessible to working professionals. The purpose of the programme is to complement the excellent functional knowledge and experience, from any discipline, that participants might possess with contemporary management knowledge to prepare them for greater responsibilities in a liberalized and globalized economy.
The PGPEM is designed for the needs of high performing professionals from across industries who want to continue working even as they upgrade their management knowledge and skills.
It provides them a strong grounding in general management through the core courses in the first year, and ample opportunity to acquire specialized knowledge through a rich choice of electives in the second year. Most of the elective classes have students from IIMB’s other diploma granting programmes providing a context for interaction among a wide variety of perspectives. Further, those who have more flexible work schedules may be able to enroll in electives scheduled on regular week days.
The innovative scheduling provides the option of residential on campus accommodation on Friday night for 1st year students, providing them ample opportunity to benefit from all the facilities at IIMB. They will be able to conduct teamwork, projects and joint study sessions related to academics and also participate in extra-curricular activities to increase bonding with a network of professionals from a variety of industries and roles.
The PGPEM also provides participants opportunities to go on term exchanges with IIMB’s international partner institutions and short duration immersions to select countries. While most of the participants already have significant international exposure prior to joining the programme, there is a concerted effort to ensure that all participants have an opportunity to travel to and experience another country. Participants of the PGPEM, with the approval of their employers, can avail of exchange opportunities at foreign universities who partner with IIMB. Further, there are opportunities to attend open immersion programmes run by partner universities and also scope for customized immersion programmes if there is significant interest in a particular country.
The graduates of PGPEM are part of the IIMB Alumni Association. Today, IIMB has a global alumni network with chapters in all major cities in India and several major cities across the world. The alumni organize regular and special events, sometimes in collaboration with a pan-IIM network, to facilitate knowledge sharing and networking.
The programme may require employers to reschedule tasks for participants on Friday afternoon, but they have an opportunity to gain both in the short and long run. In the short run, the employers can benefit by allowing the participants to conduct their practical work on real problems and issues in the organization. In the long run, they will benefit from having complete professionals who are more ready to take on challenges than someone who has only domain knowledge or management knowledge but not both.
