Building Social Sustainability Through Organ Donation Research at IIMB

Satyajit Roy, PhD scholar at IIMB, focuses his research on public healthcare systems.

Satyajit Roy is a PhD research scholar at IIM Bangalore in the Production and Operations Management area. His research interests are in the environmental and social sustainability value chains. One of his core research projects explores systemic inefficiencies in India’s organ donation ecosystem, where the deceased organ donation rate remains under one per million population (PMP). He is currently working under the guidance of Prof. Haritha Saranga, his Dissertation Advisory Committee Chair.Prof. Haritha Saranga, Chairperson, Sustainability Taskforce at IIMB, whose interest has shaped impactful sustainability-focused research.

Initial Motivation on Sustainability Research
While environmental sustainability often takes centre stage, Satyajit turned his focus to social sustainability, specifically the systemic issues around organ donation in India. He was driven by a need to address illegal trafficking, improve transplant access, and reduce the strain on public healthcare systems. The low deceased organ donation rate (below 1 PMP in India vs. 40–50 PMP in Spain/USA) sparked his inquiry into policy gaps, consent processes, and institutional incentives.

Turning Points That Stood Out:
Satyajit stated, a key shift occurred when previously hesitant public hospitals began partnering with private transplant centres to share resources. This collaborative model is now gaining momentum. Another pivotal moment: the realization that transplant success depends not just on donor consent, but also on logistics, quality maintenance, and institutional incentives.

Other Relevant Sustainability Programmes through IIMB:

Beyond organ donation, he is also working on maternal health improvements and environmental sustainability initiatives. A standout project, along with Prof. Saranga, involved training schoolchildren (Grades 6–9) as “Lifestyle for Change.”  In a pilot project with one of the leading private schools in Bengaluru under the LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) mission, families achieved over 10% reduction in household electricity consumption, measured post-intervention. A “train-the-teacher” model expanded the reach to 51 educators from schools around Bengaluru and Mysuru.
